CACTUS CAPITAL OF TEXAS
We may be small, all 678 of us, but we are a resilient community. Due to our remoteness and past challenges, Sanderson has been through its run of the mill, but we remain to hold strong within our roots and history in hopes of continuing our Texan legacy. We are glad to have you as a visitor!
Sanderson was originally founded by Charlie Wilson as Strawbridge. The site served as a division point for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and in 1882 when a roundhouse was built, the name was changed from Strawbridge to Sanderson, after Thomas P. Sanderson, the engineer in charge of construction.
Sanderson was a truly unruly frontier town: Judge Roy Bean operated a saloon here for a short time and Wilson's Cottage Bar was a popular spot for railroad workers, cowboys, and local ranchers. In 1905, when Terrell County was demarked from Pecos County, Sanderson became the county seat as a result of a countywide election. In 2025, Terrell County celebrates it's 120th birthday!
We love our visitors! Feel free to visit during our usual Visitor Center hours.
